Rod's Story

At the age of 18, I embarked on my inaugural professional journey at Hanna Barbera Studio in Hollywood, CA, renowned as the creative hub for iconic characters like Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear, and the Smurfs. Over the course of a decade, this experience played a pivotal role in shaping my current perspective on the world.

Upon reaching 30, I made a pivotal decision to delve into the realm of photography. Discovering it as a genuine creative outlet where I could visually express myself felt nothing short of magical. For the ensuing three years, my focus was on the study of photojournalism. Eager to turn my passion into a profession, I sought an internship with the Los Angeles Times.

Fortuitously, during this period, I consulted with a seasoned staff photographer at the Times—who later became Vice President Dick Cheney's photographer. It became apparent to me that the gritty reality of photojournalism, often involving capturing adverse situations, might not align with my preferences, as it constituted 90% challenging situations and only 10% positive ones. Contemplating how I could consistently engage in the 10% positive aspect, I found my answer in portraiture.

At the age of 33, I established my own studio. Within three years, I had become one of the most sought-after headshot photographers in Los Angeles. By the close of 2004, having photographed over 20,000 clients, I felt compelled to extend my expertise to the New York City Photography Market. Drawing from my extensive experience photographing actors in L.A., I honed the art of capturing individuals in a relaxed and natural manner, recognizing that respect and collaboration are the keys to success.

The allure of shooting still life or landscapes eludes me; my passion lies solely in photographing people. Creating meaningful images of individuals is a uniquely rewarding endeavor that I find unparalleled.
